Tsubame BHB Selected by Tokyo for Green Hydrogen-to-Fertilizer Initiative

Tsubame BHB Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce its selection by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) for a project to produce nitrogen-based fertilizers using green hydrogen produced in Tokyo. The Company has officially entered into an agreement with TMG to implement this initiative.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government identifies green hydrogen—produced from renewable energy—as a key solution for achieving a decarbonized society. TMG is actively promoting its adoption through a three-pillar strategy: “Produce,” “Transport,” and “Use.” Conventional ammonia production relies on “gray hydrogen” derived from natural gas. Transitioning to “green hydrogen” is a critical step toward decarbonizing the ammonia and fertilizer industries.

Under this project, green hydrogen produced at TMG’s production facility (scheduled to open in Keihinjima, Ota Ward, in October 2025) will be supplied to the Company’s pilot plant for ammonia synthesis. In collaboration with partner companies, Tsubame BHB will use this ammonia as a raw material for the trial production of nitrogen-based fertilizers.

Project Overview

  1. Project Name: Nitrogen-based Fertilizer Production Project Using Tokyo-Produced Green Hydrogen
  2. Project Period: April 1, 2026 – March 31, 2027

About Tsubame BHB Co., Ltd.

Tsubame BHB is a deep-tech company dedicated to solving global environmental and food security challenges through original technology to realize a sustainable society. We aim to establish on-site ammonia production systems using decentralized plants powered by our proprietary low-temperature, low-pressure ammonia synthesis technology. Founded in 2017, the Company utilizes electride catalyst technology developed by Honorary Professor Hideo Hosono of the Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology). Having already secured orders for two units in Japan, we are currently in discussions and collaborations for implementation in Global South regions, including Brazil, India, and Africa.

Major Awards and Global Recognition

Tsubame BHB has received significant international recognition as a leading Japanese startup:

  • 2025 Global Cleantech 100: In January 2025, the Company was selected for the “2025 Global Cleantech 100” by Cleantech Group, which recognizes the world’s most promising cleantech companies. Tsubame BHB was the first Japanese company to receive this honor (*), marking our low-temperature, low-pressure technology as a globally recognized innovation.
  • COP Participation: Following an exhibition at COP28 (Dubai, UAE) in 2023, the Company was selected to exhibit at the “Japan Pavilion” hosted by the Ministry of the Environment at COP30 (Belém, Brazil) in November 2025. Our technology is recognized at the forefront of global climate action as a concrete solution for decarbonization and climate adaptation.

Tsubame BHB is pioneering a new industrial structure through its “decentralized ammonia production plants” and “on-site production models.” By innovating processes that do not rely on large-scale transport or storage, we contribute to the resilience of energy, chemical, and food infrastructures.
