Tsubame BHB Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Masahiro Watanabe; “Tsubame BHB”), which aims to achieve on-site ammonia production at small-scale plants using electride catalysts, has completed a Memorandum of Understanding with MASDAR GREEN HYDROGEN LLC (Head Office: Abu Dhabi, UAE; CEO: Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi; “Masdar”) regarding cooperation in studies of joint development targeting the demonstration of green ammonia production. The agreement was signed on 31 May 2023 at the Make it in the Emirates Forum.

The signing ceremony was held at the Make it in the Emirates Forum organized by the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (‘MoIAT’) in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) and ADNOC. Representatives from MoIAT, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, government of Japan (‘METI’) and Universal Materials Incubator Co. Ltd. (UMI) attended the ceremony as witnesses. Using green hydrogen supplied by Masdar, and applying Tsubame BHB’s ammonia production technologies, the two companies are planning to produce green ammonia at lower temperature and lower pressure, and to evaluate processes and operating technologies against fluctuating hydrogen and electric power supply volumes.

Masdar is currently developing projects related to green hydrogen and renewable fuels. Through its green hydrogen business, Masdar is targeting annual production of up to one million tons of green hydrogen by 2030. It has set its sights on responding to demand for green hydrogen in the UAE and around the world, in fields such as aviation, ammonia, iron and steel, marine transportation, electric power, oil refining, and large-scale transport.

In collaboration with Masdar, which envisions the green hydrogen business in the UAE, where abundant renewable energy is available, Tsubame BHB will receive a stable supply of green hydrogen and undertake technology evaluations in the of green ammonia production demonstration. Using the results of these demonstration, it will promote increased production of green ammonia in collaboration with partner companies in markets throughout the world.
